What I've Learned as a Jeweler: Engagement Ring Specs That Actually Matter

Years of sourcing stones and crafting rings has taught me what specs couples think matter and what actually matters. Here's the insider truth.

Cut > Carat Weight

The 4Cs rank carat weight second. They're wrong.

A beautifully cut 1.3 carat diamond will outshine a poorly cut 1.5 carat diamond every time. Most couples notice the brilliance and sparkle first. Cut quality is what creates that.

I've had couples choose a smaller stone with an excellent cut over a larger stone with a mediocre cut. They were happier every time.

Takeaway: Don't just chase carat weight. A well-cut stone matters more.

Clarity: VS1 is the Sweet Spot

Diamond clarity grades go from Flawless down to Included. Most couples obsess over VVS1 (very very slightly included).

Here's what I've learned: you can't see inclusions in VS1 or higher with the naked eye. Not once. I've never had a couple spot an inclusion in a VS1 diamond.

VVS1 costs significantly more for a difference you can't see. It's marketing, not practicality.

Takeaway: VS1 clarity is perfect. VVS1 is unnecessary.

Color: H is Perfectly White

Diamond color grades go from D (colorless) to Z (light color). Couples assume they need D.

D and E are colorless. F, G, H are nearly colorless. By H, the difference is invisible to the human eye, especially once you set it in a ring.

But the price jump from H to D is significant.

Takeaway: H color is white enough. Don't overpay for D or E unless it's already in your budget.

The 4Cs Miss the Point

Carat, color, clarity, cut. It's a useful framework, but it misses what actually makes a stone beautiful: personal preference.

I've sourced two diamonds with identical specs. One was brilliant and lively. The other was flat. Same numbers, completely different feel.

Specs are a starting point, not the whole story. The stone itself matters.

Takeaway: Trust your eye when you see the stone. Don't just buy specs on paper.

Depth & Table Matter More Than You Think

These aren't part of the 4Cs, but they should be.

Table percentage (the width of the flat top) and depth (how deep the stone is) dramatically affect how a diamond looks. A shallow diamond looks bigger but less brilliant. A deep diamond looks smaller but more sparkly.

I look at these numbers before I ever source a stone.

Takeaway: Ask about table and depth, not just the 4Cs.

Lab-Grown vs. Natural Specs Are Identical

Here's what surprised me most: a lab-grown diamond's specs are indistinguishable from a natural diamond's.

Same 4Cs, same appearance, same durability. The only difference is origin. Yet couples stress about which to choose based on specs alone.

The spec question isn't the real question. The real question is what matters to you (cost, rarity, sustainability).

Takeaway: Don't overthink specs when choosing between lab-grown and natural. Both are identical as stones.

What I Actually Look For

When I source a stone for a client, I ignore the hype and focus on:

  1. Cut quality — Does it sparkle beautifully?

  2. Eye cleanliness — Can you see any inclusions? (No = good)

  3. Color in person — Does it look white on the hand?

  4. Personality — Does this specific stone feel right?

Specs support these things, but they don't determine them.

The Real Insight

After years of curating stones, I've learned that couples are often stressed about the wrong things. They worry about chasing perfect specs when they should be asking: "Does this stone make me happy when I look at it?"

Trust your eye. That matters more than any number.
